Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and neighboring tissue. Dentures are constructed to appear as natural teeth and improve your smile.
Those receiving dentures have two choices, either complete or partial dentures. It is important to converse your options with your dentist to identify the best form for your teeth. Complete dentures are worn to fill an area where all teeth are missing. Partial dentures are for used to fill openings from absent teeth in effort to prevent adjacent teeth from moving.
There are also two types of complete dentures; they can be “immediate” or “conventional.” Immediate dentures are created in advance so they can instantly be inserted once the existing teeth are removed. With this method, there is no wait time, patients can avoid being without teeth during the healing time. However, once the tissue heals, modifications may be necessary. Conventional dentures are made once the procedure is completed, and tissues have healed. It can take up to four or six weeks before they are complete and the tissue is healed. During this period of time, the patient will have to go without teeth.
Several appointments are necessary for attaining dentures and usually occur over a course of a few weeks. Impressions are carefully taken and used to design custom dentures. In order to guarantee the proper fit, each patient will be asked to try on the dentures for comfort, shape, and color. This may require several trial appointments. Once the optimal fit is met, your dentist will position the completed denture.
For a short period of time, it is common to experience soreness, increased saliva, and potential impaired speech and chewing. This will subside once your muscles and tissues become accustomed to the new dentures.
