Gainesville Dry Mouth Treatment

Committed to Your Total Health

When a person’s mouth doesn’t produce enough saliva it can cause dry mouth, also medically referred to as xerostomia. Saliva is a key component in our oral hygiene, and it acts as an aid to digest food as well as moisten and cleanse our mouth. If you experience dry mouth, our dentists in Gainesville and Braselton can help you to address the issue.

Common symptoms of dry mouth include:

  • Dry feeling in the mouth
  • Constant quench for water
  • Sores, split skin or cracked lips
  • Dry throat
  • Red, raw tongue
  • Bad breath

Dry mouth is not a problem to ignore. If left untreated it can increase the chances of gingivitis, tooth decay and other oral infections, including thrush. Fortunately, there are simple ways to improve and prevent dry mouth.

What Causes Dry Mouth?

There are several different factors that can contribute to dry mouth. It can be a side effect of medications, certain diseases, infections, as well as medical treatments. It can also be a sign that you have nerve damage to the head and neck area or are dehydrated. Smoking or chewing tobacco can also increase the chances of experiencing dry mouth.

Treatment

There are many actions you can take to increase the saliva production in your mouth. Consuming sugar-free candy or sugar-free gum and drinking plenty of water can alleviate some of the discomfort. A vaporizer can also help to moisten your mouth and put less strain on your mouth to produce saliva quickly. An over-the-counter saliva substitute is something to consider if you’ve had your salivary glands removed. If the dry mouth is a possible side effect of a prescribed medication, it is important to consult your doctor. He or she may be able to adjust or change the medicine dosage to help with the symptoms.
