Impacted Teeth Treatment in Gainesville

Personalized Dental Care Serving Braselton

When a tooth is unable to break through the gum’s surface, it is considered impacted. Impacted teeth are most common with wisdom teeth, as they are the third set of molars and the last teeth to emerge. An individual generally has four wisdom teeth and can expect to receive them between the ages of 16 and their early 20s. A tooth can be identified as partially impacted when a portion of the crown emerges through the gum’s surface and fully impacted if the tooth fails to break the gum’s surface completely. Our dentists in Gainesville and Braselton have experience with tooth impaction and can help you identify and treat these issues.

Symptoms

Although impacted teeth do not always display problematic signs in their early stages, there are some symptoms that may occur:

  • Toothache
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Red or bleeding gums
  • Swelling of the jaw
  • Bad breath or foul taste
  • Headache

Types of Impaction

It is important to detect impacted teeth early to avoid serious dental complications. Both partially and fully impacted teeth can develop in different forms.

The different types of tooth impaction include:

  • Mesial: The tooth is angled forward, facing towards the front of the mouth.
  • Vertical: The tooth is positioned upright but does not completely break through the gum line.
  • Distal: The tooth formed is angled backward, facing the back of the mouth.
  • Horizontal: When the tooth develops sideways and is angled toward the front of the mouth.

If not extracted, an impacted tooth can damage surrounding teeth and may result in infection or misalignment. Overcrowded teeth or partially erupted wisdom teeth are more difficult to clean properly, causing them to be more susceptible to infection and progress into tooth decay or gum disease.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Regular dental check-ups and x-rays can indicate concern of impacted teeth before any symptoms are present. In order to detect impacted teeth early, you should visit your dentist regularly. Tooth extraction is often recommended to avoid future complications. At BGW Dental Group, we offer tooth extraction services from the comfort of our offices in Gainesville and Braselton.
